eSIM or SIM in Ho Chi Minh — Buy at the Airport or Before You Fly?
Short trip: buy an eSIM before you fly. Over ten days: a carrier shop in the city is cheapest.
For a 3–5 day trip, an online eSIM bought before departure (about $6–11) is the easiest. For ten days or more, or if you need a Vietnamese number, a SIM from a carrier shop in the city (60,000–200,000 VND) is the cheapest. Counters at Tan Son Nhat airport charge 185,000–500,000 VND for the same data, two to three times the city price (data 2026-06).
Three options compared
| Option | Price range | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Online eSIM before you fly | $6–11 (7–15 day data plans) | eSIM-capable phone · 3–7 days · no number needed |
| Airport counter SIM (Viettel · Vinaphone · Mobifone) | 185k–500k VND | You need a Vietnamese number the moment you land |
| Carrier shop in the city | 60k–200k VND | 10+ days · calls needed · saving money |
Example: Viettel TR80, 220,000 VND — 15 days, 5 GB per day (airport counter, 2026-06). The same plan is cheaper at a city shop. Buy at an official carrier store (Viettel Store, VinaPhone, MobiFone signage) so the registration is done properly.
Check these when buying
- Original passport. Vietnam requires real-name SIM registration by law; no passport, no SIM. Copies and photos may be refused.
- Activate in front of you. A pre-activated SIM may already have lost part of its validity.
- A fresh number. Recycled numbers can be blocked from Grab and Zalo sign-up. If sign-up fails, ask for a swap on the spot.
- No extra registrations on your passport. Watch the registration screen and take the passport back as soon as it is done.
- Confirm data works before paying. Play one YouTube video, then pay.
Common mistakes
- Staying on home roaming. Daily roaming fees add up; for three days or more an eSIM is almost always cheaper (check your carrier's app for your rate).
- Needing a number with a data-only eSIM. Data-only eSIMs have no phone number. Grab and Zalo can be registered with your home number, but the SMS code has to reach you — keep SMS reception on your home number switched on.
- Resellers who grab you in the arrivals hall. They are not the official counters. No price list, no purchase.
Data alone is enough to reach Rabbit Bar
Telegram, WeChat, KakaoTalk and Zalo all work on data. One message from the alley entrance and the manager comes out to meet you. No phone number needed.
FAQ
How much is a SIM card at Ho Chi Minh airport?
Counters at Tan Son Nhat charge 185,000–500,000 VND (data 2026-06). The same data costs 60,000–200,000 VND at a carrier shop in the city.
Do I need a passport for a Vietnam eSIM?
Online eSIMs are usually bought and installed without a passport. Physical SIMs from local shops require your original passport because real-name registration is the law.
Can I use Grab and Zalo with only an eSIM?
Grab works on data alone. Zalo needs an SMS code at sign-up, so either keep SMS on your home number working or use a SIM with a Vietnamese number.
