Home currency to Vietnamese dong: compare what you receive

There is no universal winner between bringing your own currency, buying USD first, or withdrawing VND. Compare the final amount after both exchange spreads and fees.

Direct exchange versus a USD stop

A traveller with Korean won can compare KRW → VND with KRW → USD → VND. The same method applies to another home currency, provided the Vietnamese counter actually accepts those banknotes. Buying USD first introduces another transaction, so a favourable-looking USD rate alone is not enough to prove that route is cheaper.

Ask for the cash buying rate when you are selling foreign notes to receive VND. Do not accidentally compare it with the bank’s selling rate or a transfer-only rate. Vietcombank publishes a rate table, but the branch must still confirm acceptance of your currency, note condition and the rate available when you transact.

  • Direct route: home-currency amount × VND received per unit, less all fees.
  • Via USD: home amount ÷ home-currency cost per USD × VND received per USD, less fees at both stages.

Make sure each quote uses the same starting amount and time. A favourable exchange spread can be outweighed by a separate fixed fee, transport cost or poor rate when changing unused cash back.

A worked comparison, not a live quote

Illustrative numbers only: suppose 100 units of home currency buy 1,600,000 VND directly after fees. Suppose the same 100 units buy 65 USD after the first exchange, and a Vietnamese counter pays 25,000 VND per USD with no further fee. The second route produces 1,625,000 VND, a difference of 25,000 VND.

In that example, an extra fee above 25,000 VND removes the advantage. These numbers are invented to explain the calculation; they are not current KRW, USD or bank rates. Replace every value with a same-day quote for your own currency and note denomination before deciding.

Card terminal: VND or your home currency?

This is a different choice from exchanging banknotes. A card terminal or ATM may offer dynamic currency conversion (DCC), charging in your home currency instead of VND. Visa says the offered exchange rate and extra fees should be visible and that the choice belongs to the cardholder.

Compare the displayed DCC cost with your card issuer’s conversion and foreign-transaction fees. Selecting VND leaves conversion to the card payment arrangement and issuer; it does not remove every possible fee. If the screen is unclear or somebody chooses conversion for you, stop and ask for the options to be explained before accepting. Keep the receipt showing the currency charged.

Before arriving in central Saigon

  1. Check your card’s overseas settings, withdrawal limit and fees before travel.
  2. Confirm where your cash currency can be exchanged and the counter’s hours.
  3. Carry a practical mix of VND notes for small payments rather than assuming every purchase accepts a large note or foreign currency.
  4. Count the received cash at the counter and keep the transaction record.

Use our exchange, ATM and banknote guide for the next steps. If visiting Rabbit Bar, confirm the quoted price basis and accepted payment method through the official contact section. The venue is not presented here as an exchange counter, and this comparison does not promise a special conversion rate.

Questions before you go

Is buying USD first always better than bringing KRW?

No. Compare the VND received from the same starting KRW amount after both exchanges and all fees. Also confirm that the destination counter accepts your notes.

Are the example rates current?

No. The worked example uses invented figures solely to demonstrate the calculation. Obtain current quotes before exchanging.

Does choosing VND on a card terminal eliminate all fees?

No. Your issuer may still apply conversion or foreign-transaction fees. Compare those with any displayed DCC charge.
